ID1342Austrian Taifun lighter, similar to Hurricane/Cyclone series with advertisement "Rotunde Wien" (Rotunde Vienna). Height of this lighter is rather unusual.

The Rotunde in Vienna was a building erected for the Weltausstellung 1873 Wien (the Vienna World Fair of 1873). The building was a partially covered circular steel construction, 84 m (approx. 275 ft) in height and 108 m (approx. 354 ft) in diameter. It was designed by Austrian architect Karl Freiherr von Hasenauer and built by the German company Johann Caspar Harkort of Duisburg. While heavily criticized by professionals, the central building of the World Fair was accepted enthusiastically by the public. It was used for shows and fairs later on.

The Rotunde burned down in 1937. Its former location is now occupied by a portal of the Vienna International Fair. Source

ID1101Box set containing a 1974 Zippo slim lighter and pocket knife with Kendall ad.

The Kendall Refining Company was founded in 1881 in Bradford, Pennsylvania, with the goal of refining local Pennsylvania Grade Crude Oil into kerosene, lubricants and greases. With more than 125 years of experience to draw upon, Kendall Motor Oil has led the industry with a number of significant firsts.

In 1928, Kendall introduced the first oil designated for winter use as well as the first 2,000-mile motor oil (unprecedented at a time when the standard was 500-1,000 miles), and later developed the first pre-packaged, factory-sealed, one-quart oil can.

In the mid-30s, Kendall Refining Company placed an order for 500 Zippo lighters. These are believed to be the first company-advertised lighters produced by Zippo and are highly collectible. Company History

ID1100This Zippo display contains an original mint 1943 3-barrel Black Crackle Zippo. The lighter has never been used or filled and has all it’s paint remaining. The insert still has the shiny electroplated zinc coating the factory put on it to protect it from rusting. It has not been polished. On most black crackles found nowadays the layer of zinc has corroded and turned into a hard dull grey green crust. Not on this perfectly preserved example though.

The small brown paper inside the frame explains that the black wrinkle paint and zinc coating on the insert were placed there to protect the lighter from corroding. For the first time since Zippo was founded the lifetime warranty explicitly excluded the finish of the lighter!

Under the Zippo and leaflet is a reprint of a Zippo ad from 1942 explaining that the whole production is drafted by the army. Though Zippo’s were unavailable in the U.S. Zippo kept advertising them during the entire war.

Completing the display is a replica of a display flame used by Roseart, a Bradford based funeral home owner that started making Zippo table lighters in the 1950’s. The original flames were made and used in the 1950’s. The one in the display was cast from an original in clear red resin.

ID10681947 Zippo, 3 barrel hinge, with Alco ad. PAT. 2032695.

The American Locomotive Company was a builder of railroad locomotives in the U.S. Alco was the second-largest steam locomotive builder in the United States, producing over 75,000 locomotives. Although it was strongly committed to the steam locomotive, Alco produced the first commercially successful diesel-electric locomotive in 1924 in a consortium with General Electric (electrical equipment) and Ingersoll-Rand (diesel engine). This locomotive was sold to the Central Railroad of New Jersey, and subsequent locomotives were built for a number of railroads including the Long Island Rail Road and the Chicago and North Western Railway. By 1948, Alco possessed 40% of the diesel locomotive market. The company held the number two position in the market until General Electric, dissatisfied with the results of its partnership with Alco, entered the domestic road diesel locomotive market itself in 1956. GE quickly took the number two position from Alco, and eventually eclipsed GM-EMD in overall production. Source

Transcript

The Great Northern Railway was the creation of the 19th century railroad tycoon James J. Hill and was developed from the St. Paul and Pacific Railroad. Much of the early history of Waterton-Glacier is the story of the Great Northern Railway. The railway helped promote legislation that established Glacier National Park in 1910.
